Marjan Javanbakht, PhD
Research Consultant

Specializing in epidemiology, with an emphasis on the health and behavioral sciences, Marjan Javanbakht is Sentient Research's expert on research design, methodology, and quantitative techniques and analysis. After completing her undergraduate studies in biological sciences at UC Santa Barbara, Marjan’s stint as an agricultural inspector for the department of food and agriculture inspired her to pursue a degree in public health. With this goal in-mind, along with her desire to experience life in New England, Marjan entered the Masters of Public Health Program at Yale University. It was during this time that her interest in understanding the distribution and determinants of infectious diseases was strengthened.

After receiving her MPH, Marjan returned to California and served as a research project coordinator and ultimately research project director at both Cedar-Sinai medical center and Charles Drew University, School of Medicine. In this capacity she had the opportunity to work on a number of projects including an assessment of childhood immunization coverage in Los Angeles County, cardiovascular disease and hypertension studies, family studies of osteoporosis, and HIV/AIDS clinic trials. As part of this work, she became more and more interested in understanding study design methodology that would help to limit bias in research findings as well as statistical and quantitative methods that would help to correctly and accurately describe the story that lays within all research data. She pursued further training in this area and received her PhD in epidemiology from UCLA. This training has given her expertise in the area of study design, including observational and experimental studies. Her data analytic skills range from sample size determination and power calculations, to managing and analyzing large and complex databases for disease surveillance and research studies. For example, she has evaluated changes in medication adherence over a 4-year period among a large cohort of individuals with HIV, as well as analyzed the time to STI re-infection among the more than 40,000 patients seen annually at public clinics in Los Angeles County.

Prior to working with Sentient Research, Marjan was a senior epidemiologist for the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, where she was responsible for the management and analysis of multiple complex data systems, morbidity reports, and epidemiologic research. Her research has been presented over 40 times at professional conferences and she has published over 25 articles in peer-reviewed journals. In addition to her role at Sentient Research, Marjan serves as associate professor at UCLA in the Department of Epidemiology. When she’s not crunching numbers, Marjan enjoys spending time with her family, training for half marathons, and blazing through books on her Kindle Fire.
