Sentient Research Conducts Qualitative Study to Understand the Needs and Gaps in Services for HIV-Positive Women in Los Angeles County
10-29-2017

There are 5,526 women living with HIV in Los Angeles County (LAC), representing 11% of all people with HIV in the county. Sentient Research conducted a qualitative study consisting of 10 key informant interviews with HIV service providers and three focus groups with HIV-positive women to understand service gaps, barriers to service utilization, and general needs of women living with HIV. The study revealed that while high-quality HIV medical care is widely accessible and utilized by HIV-positive women in LAC, there is room for improvement in regard to addressing the social determinants of health (namely, housing), the delivery of both HIV medical and social services, increasing availability of mental health services, and educating the community about HIV. We presented the study’s key findings and recommendations to community members, stakeholders, and service providers, who plan to use them to improve services for women living with HIV in LAC.
