The Issue

HIV/AIDS service organizations often use inefficient systems to conduct HIV and STI testing.

This inefficiency can impede delivery of services across the HIV care continuum and leads to delays in transmitting data to funders.

The Outcomes

Developed in 2014, CHAMP is a web-based application for client registration, risk assessment, testing, and linkage to care and PrEP services that allows staff to collect and retrieve client data in real-time.

CHAMP streamlines HIV testing and linkage services for staff and clients, easily exports data for transmission to funders, and provides customized testing and linkage reports in just a few clicks.

CHAMP is being used used to manage over 500,000 HIV tests annually, and is currently operating in 14 US states and Uganda.

While hundreds of organizations offer HIV testing and linkage to care services, many still use systems and processes that rely on paper forms, impacting both service, staff, and clients. Thus, few organizations are able to quickly utilize the data they collect to maximize the efficiency of their services and transmit testing and linkage outcomes to government agencies like HRSA, CDC, and state and local health departments.

CHAMP is a software as a service HIV and STI testing and linkage management platform developed by Sentient Innovation, a partnership between Sentient Research and Noah Bardach, PhD. CHAMP was created to improve the service experience for clients while making it easier for staff to seamlessly deliver client-centered services, with the ultimate goal of improving HIV care continuum outcomes. CHAMP can be used by organizations of any size, from small local programs to national or international programs.

CHAMP improves the client experience.

Clients register in CHAMP once and complete a risk assessment using a touch screen. Clients can do this privately before meeting with a test counselor. All registration and risk information is automatically populated into the testing form when they are called in for HIV testing. Every testing and linkage activity is associated with a client’s specific profile to facilitate client-centered services.

This experience is less intrusive for clients and speeds up the testing process. Clients are texted or emailed a result card moments after testing and they can log into their account to view their HIV and STI testing history. Waiting times in high volume testing locations are also reduced by allowing clients to make testing appointments online.

CHAMP improves the organizational workflow and saves staff time.

CHAMP was designed to be flexible for different testing situations like a traditional clinic, mobile testing unit, alternative test site, or event-level testing. The system can be used on any web-enabled device and uses best practices for HIPAA compliance and data security. Because clients consent, register, and complete a risk assessment before they meet with a testing counselor, staff only need to explain the testing procedure, conduct the test, and provide any required referrals to linkage services. Linkage staff are automatically notified by CHAMP so they can immediately follow up with clients regarding HIV treatment, PrEP, or linkage to other needed services.

CHAMP provides real-time reports and monitoring.

CHAMP allows managers, analysts, or administrators to run customized reports in real-time. Testing reports, linkage reports, and multiple cross tabulations can be readily produced and transmitted in any format required. Managers can monitor all staff and client activities (e.g., number of HIV tests completed, number of clients in queue, waiting times, positivity rate, clients linked into care) in real time.
